Welcome to the Grillo Lab!

Elucidating the Molecular Mechanisms of
Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Disease

We are a vibrant interdisciplinary research group located at the rapidly growing University of Cincinnati. Our research explores the interface between biochemistry, metabolic physiology, and medicine. We harness the power of small molecules to better understand the mechanistic underpinnings of age-progressive and genetic neurometabolic diseases that are caused by mitochondrial dysfunctions. In this vein, we are especially determined to ask whether defects in mitochondrial energy production, metabolism, or biogenesis elicit micronutrient dyshomeostasis to cause neuroinflammation and brain degeneration in human disease.
